I think you should identify key colours and shapes now from Asztec/Mayan sculpture and carvings and use them as building blocks; for example, gather together loads of motifs/forms/components from existing imagery and then try recombining/essentialising those shapes until you start generating some interesting results - take a look at Ruben's blog, for example, for when he was first designing his chef character (but the say would go if you were designing environments too) - Ruben used sihouettes of foods from which to create his base shape - and very effective it turned out to be! :)
